2026 U-17 WWC: Flamingos Discover Round of 16 Opponents After Group Stage

According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Nigeria’s Flamingos will face Mexico in the Round of 16 of the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco following the conclusion of the group stage.

The Nigerian U-17 women’s national team will meet Mexico on Thursday, October 29, with both countries battling for a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Mexico secured the encounter after finishing second in Group F, behind Spain. The North Americans confirmed their qualification for the knockout stage with a 1-0 victory over Australia in their final group match on Sunday.

Citlalli Reyes scored the decisive goal to give Mexico all three points and secure their passage into the last 16, setting up a meeting with Nigeria, who also finished second in their group.

The Flamingos, coached by Akeem Busari, advanced to the knockout stage after collecting six points from three matches in Group B. Their campaign began with a 2-1 defeat to Poland before they recovered with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico.

Nigeria completed the group stage with an impressive 3-1 win over defending champions North Korea on Friday, October 23. The victory proved crucial in securing their place in the next round and provided a strong response after their opening-match disappointment.

The result also demonstrated the Flamingos’ ability to compete against some of the strongest teams in the age category as they prepare for the knockout phase.

Mexico, meanwhile, will enter Thursday’s encounter after recording two victories and suffering one defeat during the group stage. Their results included a 2-0 loss to Spain, a 3-1 victory over Chile and Sunday’s narrow win against Australia.

The Round of 16 meeting in Salé will determine which team progresses to the quarter-finals, with Nigeria hoping to build on their victory over the defending champions and continue their pursuit of the world title.

The Flamingos will also be looking to improve on their previous performances at the tournament. Nigeria finished third at the 2022 edition in India, their best result in the history of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

However, Mexico will provide a challenging test, having finished third at the 2025 tournament after previously reaching the final in 2018.

With both sides having secured their places in the knockout stage, Thursday’s encounter presents Nigeria with an opportunity to maintain their momentum and move one step closer to the latter stages of the competition.
