10 reasons some people choose not to have children, even after marriage

Marriage and parenthood are often treated as a package deal, particularly in societies where relatives expect couples to have children soon after their wedding. But some married people deliberately choose a life without children.

1. They value their freedom. Some couples enjoy being able to travel, pursue hobbies and make spontaneous decisions without the responsibilities of raising children.

2. They are worried about the cost. Food, school fees, healthcare, housing and other expenses make some people question whether they can comfortably raise a child.

3. They want to focus on their careers. Some people have personal or professional goals that they do not want to put aside for parenthood.

4. They do not feel a desire to become parents. Not everyone experiences the urge to have children, and some people are comfortable admitting that.

5. They witnessed difficult parenting experiences. Growing up in a troubled household may make some people cautious about bringing children into the world.

6. They worry about the state of the world. Concerns about economic hardship, insecurity, climate change and the future can influence their decision.

7. They want to protect their relationship. Some couples fear that parenting responsibilities could put pressure on their relationship, even though many others find parenthood rewarding.

8. They value their peace of mind. Raising children involves significant emotional and practical responsibilities, and some people do not want that lifestyle.

9. They want to care for existing family members. Some people already have substantial responsibilities towards parents, siblings or other relatives and do not wish to take on parenthood as well.

10. They reject the idea that marriage must lead to children. They believe a marriage can be meaningful and complete without becoming parents.

Choosing not to have children is a personal decision, just as choosing to become a parent is. However, it is important for couples to discuss this before marriage because a major disagreement about children can create serious tension later.
