Update on Eastleigh Building Collapse as 26 Missing People Are Found, Two Injured Taken to KNH

Kenya Red Cross has confirmed that 26 people previously reported missing after an 18-storey building collapsed in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area have been traced and accounted for.

Two injured people have also been taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for treatment following the incident on Friday, October 23.

In an update shared on social media, Kenya Red Cross said rescue teams were working alongside other emergency agencies to search the affected site. Responders were also checking whether anyone else remained unaccounted for following the collapse.

The organisation has established a tracing desk at the scene to help families seeking information about relatives who may have been inside the building. People looking for missing family members have been advised to contact Kenya Red Cross through its toll-free number, 1199.

The building, which was reportedly under construction, collapsed along Yusuf Haji Avenue near Day to Day Supermarket in Eastleigh. Initial reports placed the incident near 9th Street, although some accounts referred to 8th Street.

Rescue operations continued as emergency teams worked through the debris. Authorities had not yet established the cause of the collapse or confirmed the total number of people who were inside when the building came down.

The incident has renewed concerns about building safety in Nairobi, following another building collapse along Moi Avenue in the Central Business District on October 17. That earlier incident occurred during planned demolition work at a building that housed Club Avenida.

Nairobi County officials had reported that 24 workers were at the Moi Avenue site. Four sustained injuries, and all workers were eventually accounted for after the incident.

As the Eastleigh rescue operation continues, authorities face the task of establishing whether everyone who may have been affected has been located. Families are waiting for further updates as emergency teams continue their work.
