Thousands Of Kenyans Becomes Jobless As Govt Dissolves 72 Companies, Many More Targeted

Concerns over potential job losses and economic disruption have heightened following the government’s decision, through the Registrar of Companies, to officially dissolve 72 corporate entities while slating another 68 firms for compulsory deregistration within ninety days.

In dual statutory declarations published in the Kenya Gazette on Friday, October 23, 2026, Deputy Registrar of Companies Hiram Gachugi confirmed that 72 corporate entities were struck off the official register with immediate effect under Section 897 of the Companies Act.

A separate Gazette notification provided an explicit three-month grace period for 68 additional firms to show cause why they should not suffer similar administrative dissolution, inviting creditors, directors, and interested members of the public to contest the intended deregistration.

The affected corporate entities span crucial cross-cutting sectors of the national economy, including commercial real estate, building construction, healthcare provision, renewable energy, telecommunications technology, logistics, hospitality, agricultural processing, and specialized management consultancy.

Among the dissolved firms are entities operating in water purification, educational institutions, textile manufacturing, media production, and bulk commodity trading, alongside regional development vehicles and advisory service providers.

While statutory regulations under the Companies Act allow for both voluntary deregistration by directors and involuntary strike-offs initiated directly by the Registrar for failure to file statutory annual returns or maintain active operations, the official Gazette communications omitted specific reasons for individual entity removals.

Furthermore, the state registry did not provide data regarding the operational status or payroll numbers of the affected organizations, leaving the full extent of economic disengagement and employment impact across the private sector unclear.

This latest regulatory enforcement follows a similar sweeping compliance campaign executed in late September 2026, during which the Registrar of Companies dissolved 176 entities while listing 155 others for prospective removal.

Under Kenyan corporate law, once a firm is struck off the official registry, it loses its status as a recognized legal entity, barring its capacity to execute contracts, operate corporate bank accounts, or hold property, unless formally restored through a High Court order.
