Thousands Of Kenyan Workers Face Uncertain Futures As Government Wipes 72 Companies Off The Register

Thousands of Kenyans could soon lose their jobs after the government struck 72 companies off the official register and earmarked another 68 for possible closure.

Two Gazette notices published on Friday October 23 confirmed the move. Deputy Registrar of Companies Hiram Gachugi said the 72 firms were dissolved while the other 68 were given three months to explain why they should not face the same fate.

The impact on workers remains unclear. The Registrar did not say whether the affected companies were still operating or how many people they employed. That has left many families worried about what comes next.

The affected firms span many sectors of the economy. They include real estate and construction as well as healthcare and energy. Others work in technology and transport while some deal in hospitality and agriculture.

Among the dissolved businesses are those in water purification and solar energy. Others handled property development and textiles while some offered media production and education services.

The notice said the companies were removed from the register with effect from the date of publication. It cited section 897(4) of the Companies Act.

The remaining 68 companies include players in logistics and retail. Interested parties have three months to challenge the removal and show why the businesses should stay registered.

The notices did not give reasons for the dissolutions. Under the law companies can be struck off through voluntary applications or action started by the Registrar.

The latest move comes barely a month after the Registrar dissolved 176 companies in September and listed another 155 for possible removal.

Once a company is dissolved it ceases to exist as a registered legal entity unless it is later formally restored under the Companies Act.
