Bloomberg’s feature, “In Nigeria, Solar Panels Are the New Wedding Gift,” reported that solar panels, inverters and lithium batteries are increasingly becoming preferred wedding gifts in Nigeria, as households seek relief from high fuel costs and unreliable electricity supply.
According to the report, newlyweds are adding solar systems to wedding registries alongside conventional gifts such as household appliances and furniture. The shift reflects a growing view of solar equipment as essential household infrastructure rather than a luxury purchase.
According to the report, rising petrol prices, frequent power outages and cheaper Chinese-made solar technology are driving more Nigerian families towards solar power. The development is changing consumer spending patterns and making renewable-energy equipment a mainstream part of home-building and family life.
At Lagos’s Alaba International Market, solar panels, inverters and batteries now compete for shelf space with generators, televisions and refrigerators, the report said. It identified brands including Deye and Felicity Solar, while also noting concerns about counterfeit products with names resembling established brands.
The report suggested that, for many Nigerian couples, a solar installation now represents a practical foundation for starting a home—one that can reduce dependence on costly generators and help keep essential appliances running during blackouts.
