Sifuna’s Security Forced to Remove Graduate After She Refused to Let Him Go

Edwin Sifuna’s security team was forced to intervene during the Catholic University of Eastern Africa’s graduation ceremony after a female graduate refused to release the Nairobi senator, repeatedly insisting she would not let him go.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, during the university’s 45th graduation ceremony, where Sifuna attracted considerable attention from students. A video capturing the unusual encounter quickly circulated online, sparking reactions among Kenyans.

In the viral clip shared on TikTok by user @diana1gb, Sifuna is seen walking through a crowd of graduates dressed in their graduation gowns and sashes. The politician appeared cheerful as students gathered around him.

At one point, a female graduate grabbed Sifuna and refused to release him despite his attempts to continue moving through the crowd. The woman remained determined to hold onto the senator, prompting his security officers to intervene.

The graduate was heard repeatedly insisting, “Simwachilii,” meaning she would not let him go. Sifuna responded jokingly that security officers would intervene if she continued holding onto him, before his team stepped forward.

Sifuna’s security detail eventually separated the graduate from the politician and escorted him away from the crowd. The senator appeared amused by the encounter, laughing as he continued walking, while the graduate was left behind.

The video triggered mixed reactions on social media, with some Kenyans criticising the graduate for getting too comfortable with the politician, while others interpreted the encounter as a playful moment during an otherwise celebratory graduation ceremony.

One social media user argued that the graduate had crossed a boundary, noting that Sifuna was a prominent political figure who deserved personal space. Others suggested the senator’s laughter showed he was not offended by the incident.

Sifuna also received a warm reception at the ceremony, drawing loud cheers and ululations after being introduced by the university’s vice-chancellor. The event brought together graduating students and notable guests, including former Machakos governor Kivutha Kibwana.
