Red Arrows beat Kaizer Chiefs in CAF Cup shootout
Zambian club Red Arrows reached the CAF Confederation Cup group stage for the first time on Friday after beating South Africans Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 in a penalty shootout.
Chiefs won the second leg of the final round qualifier 1-0 thanks to a headed goal by defender Bradley Cross off a free-kick after 66 minutes in Durban.
That result levelled the aggregate score at 1-1 after Arrows won the first leg 1-0 last weekend, also through a header after a set piece.
Chiefs slammed two of their five penalties against the crossbar and another was saved by Arrows goalkeeper Charles Kalumba.
After failing to score from their first penalty, Arrows converted the following three with substitute Ricky Banda netting the fourth to win the tie.
Defeat was a huge blow for Chiefs, who had set their sights on going far in the African equivalent of the UEFA Europa League after reaching the group stage last season.
Elimination will increase pressure on French coach Fernando Da Cruz. Chiefs have made a disappointing start in the domestic league, winning only three of eight matches to lie fifth.
"Chiefs dominated the game, created a lot of chances, and still lost. We should have won by three of four goals," said Da Cruz.
Mduduzi Shabalala was the main culprit when it came to poor finishing. The South African twice fired over in the closing stages when well positioned inside the area.
Primeiro Agosto of Angola also advanced. They beat Virunga from the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 in Luanda through a late Mabilson goal to complete a 3-1 overall victory.
