The R795 million N2 Kokstad Interchange project was officially launched on Friday, 23 October, by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, alongside provincial transport MEC Siboniso Duma and other government officials.
Located approximately 3km south of Kokstad’s central business district, the upgraded interchange replaces a dangerous intersection that previously caused congestion and created risks for motorists crossing high-speed traffic lanes.
The project is particularly important for the trucking industry, with the N2 and R56 serving as key routes for agricultural produce, timber and other freight moving between the two provinces.
The interchange includes a new three-span bridge over the N2, upgraded access ramps, realigned roads and improved drainage infrastructure.
Approximately 2km of the R56 has been realigned and upgraded, while a dedicated service road improves access to commercial and industrial properties and agricultural operations.
A new multi-deck weighbridge and Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) centre form part of the development.
The facilities will allow authorities to monitor heavy vehicles, conduct roadworthiness inspections and enforce statutory axle-load limits.
The new traffic control centre will also support traffic monitoring, incident management and overload control.
Speaking at the launch, Creecy said the interchange would improve the movement of freight between KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape while strengthening connections between Kokstad, Lesotho and surrounding communities.
She said the improved infrastructure would support safer and faster movement of traffic, helping goods and people reach their destinations more efficiently.
The project has also delivered employment and business opportunities in the Greater Kokstad area.
According to the official launch address, more than R59 million was spent on local labour, creating employment for 500 people.
A further R184 million supported 71 small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs), while more than R26 million was invested in community development.
The project also provided 530 training opportunities, helping local workers develop skills that could benefit them beyond the construction period.
SANRAL supported several community initiatives, including improvements at Kokstad Primary School and Westland School, donations to local welfare organisations and career exposure opportunities for high school learners.
The new interchange is expected to strengthen Kokstad’s position as an important regional transport gateway while reducing congestion, improving road safety and supporting the movement of agricultural freight.
For truck operators, the upgraded intersection and dedicated overload-control facilities are expected to improve traffic flow while helping protect the N2 and surrounding roads from damage caused by overloaded vehicles.
The project forms part of broader government infrastructure investment aimed at improving transport efficiency and supporting economic development.
