R700,000 Landed in His Account, But He Refused to Spend a Cent Meet South Africa’s Honest Hero

Dundee Security Guard Returns R700,000 Mistakenly Deposited Into His Account Despite Financial Temptation

A security guard from Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal, has earned praise for his honesty after returning R700,000 mistakenly deposited into his bank account, despite earning a monthly salary of just R7,000.

In a remarkable story of integrity and personal values, Lucky Thamsanqa Khumalo chose to return the substantial sum to his employer rather than take advantage of the payroll error.

According to the account shared, Khumalo discovered the unexpected deposit last month while expecting his usual monthly salary of R7,000. The sudden appearance of R700,000 in his account left him surprised, prompting him to seek confirmation of the amount.

However, the unexpected windfall also reportedly sparked a disagreement at home after Khumalo showed the money to his wife.

Khumalo reportedly told his wife about the deposit to confirm how much money had entered his account. After realising that the balance included R700,000, she was said to have become excited and suggested that they use some of the money to extend their home.

The couple reportedly live in a two-room house, making the prospect of improving their living conditions particularly appealing.

However, Khumalo did not agree with the suggestion, as he suspected the money had been deposited into his account by mistake. The difference in their reactions reportedly led to a disagreement, highlighting the difficult choices that can arise when an unexpected financial opportunity presents itself.

Rather than spending the money or making plans around it, Khumalo decided to approach his employer to establish where the deposit had come from.

According to Khumalo’s manager, the security guard arrived at the office yesterday morning and explained that a substantial amount of money had entered his account, which he believed did not belong to him.

The manager said an investigation subsequently established that a payroll error had occurred. Khumalo was supposed to receive his regular salary of R7,000, not the R700,000 that had been deposited.

What reportedly impressed the manager most was that Khumalo returned the entire amount without spending even a single cent.

His decision to return the money has drawn attention to the importance of honesty and accountability, particularly at a time when financial pressures can make unexpected money difficult to resist.

In recognition of Khumalo’s conduct, his manager reportedly purchased several gifts for him, including a bicycle, Pringles snacks and a Christmas tree.

The manager also promised him a salary increase of R100, bringing his monthly earnings from R7,000 to R7,100.

Although the increase is modest compared with the amount he returned, the gesture was presented as a reward for his honesty and the trust he demonstrated towards his employer.

Khumalo’s decision has also prompted discussion about the value of integrity, especially for people who face financial difficulties and might be tempted to keep money that mistakenly finds its way into their accounts.

Concluding the matter, Khumalo reportedly made it clear that he did not want to associate himself with dishonest behaviour.

His actions demonstrate that, despite the temptation of a life-changing amount of money, he believed returning funds that did not belong to him was the right thing to do.

For someone earning R7,000 a month and living in a two-room house, the unexpected deposit could easily have been viewed as an opportunity to improve his family’s circumstances. Instead, Khumalo chose to protect his integrity.

His story, which reportedly originates from Dundee in KwaZulu-Natal, serves as a reminder that character is often revealed when people face difficult choices and have an opportunity to benefit at someone else’s expense.
