The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has held talks with China North Industries Group Corporation Limited (NORINCO Group) on potential cooperation in crude oil production, gas commercialisation, energy infrastructure and investment.
The discussions took place on Friday when a delegation from NORINCO Group visited NNPC Ltd to explore areas of mutual interest, including technology, energy trading and opportunities to expand Nigeria’s oil and gas operations.
The Chinese delegation was led by the Vice President of China Zhenhua Oil Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of NORINCO Group, Mr Zuxi Huang.
The delegation was received by NNPC Ltd’s Group Chief Financial Officer, Dapo Segun, and Executive Vice President, Gas, Power and New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, alongside other members of the company’s leadership, who participated virtually.
According to NNPC Ltd, both parties exchanged views on their respective business interests and examined how a potential partnership could improve the company’s operations, increase crude oil and gas production and strengthen Nigeria’s energy security.
The engagement comes amid growing international interest in Africa’s energy sector, as countries across the continent seek to expand gas utilisation, address electricity supply gaps and meet rising energy demand.
Nigeria, which holds Africa’s largest proven natural gas reserves, remains a major destination for investment in oil and gas development.
NNPC Ltd said it would continue to engage international partners with the technical expertise and financial capacity required to expand the country’s energy infrastructure.
The company also highlighted its previous engagements with Chinese firms, including the Abuja Independent Power Plant project, which involved China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) and GE Vernova.
Although the latest discussions focused on possible areas of cooperation, NNPC Ltd did not announce any signed agreement or disclose the financial value of a prospective partnership.
The engagement nevertheless signals continued efforts by the national oil company to attract international investment and technical partnerships to support Nigeria’s energy development.
