Mwengi Mutuse Reveals Alfred Mutua’s 2027 Machakos Senate Ambition

Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua is reportedly considering a return to elective politics in Machakos County, with Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse revealing that the former governor could contest the senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.

According to a report published by TUKO.co.ke on Saturday, October 24, 2026, Mutuse made the remarks while accompanying President William Ruto during his development tour of the Ukambani region.

Speaking at a gathering in Machakos, Mutuse referred to his past working relationship with Mutua, acknowledging that he had previously served under him when Mutua was governor.

The MP then raised the possibility of Mutua seeking the Senate seat, asking residents whether they would support his former boss if he entered the race.

Mutuse’s remarks prompted a positive response from the crowd, according to the report. However, the comments do not amount to an official declaration of candidacy by the Cabinet secretary.

Alfred Mutua served as Machakos County’s first governor after being elected in 2013. He won a second term in 2017 but could not seek a third consecutive term in 2022 because of constitutional term limits for governors.

He later joined national government, where he has served in Cabinet positions, including his current role as Labour Cabinet Secretary.

Mutua is also the founder and leader of the Maendeleo Chap Chap party, which has outlined plans to field candidates in the 2027 elections.

The Machakos Senate seat is currently held by Agnes Kavindu of the Wiper Party. A potential bid by Mutua could introduce another contender into the county’s political contest ahead of the next general election.

However, Mutua has not publicly confirmed that he intends to run for the seat, according to TUKO.co.ke. His reported interest should therefore be treated as an emerging political possibility rather than a confirmed campaign.

Questions also remain about whether he would leave his Cabinet position to pursue elective office, as required under applicable election laws.

The development comes as political leaders across Kenya begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with alliances and possible candidacies attracting increasing public attention.
