Miracle in Eastleigh: Pregnant Woman Pulled Alive From Building Rubble
A pregnant woman has been rescued from the rubble of the building that collapsed in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area, and rushed to hospital. Her rescue has given hope to families still waiting for news of their loved ones.
The multi-storey building, which was still under construction, came down on Friday, October 23, along the busy 9th Street and Yusuf Haji Avenue stretch.
This is one of the most crowded commercial areas in the city, full of traders, shoppers and residents going about their day.
Kenya Red Cross teams and Nairobi County emergency crews rushed to the scene. Heavy machinery was brought in to clear debris and reach anyone who might be trapped, while officials urged the public to stay away so rescuers could work safely. Reports indicate that seven people were listed as missing, and the search has continued through the night.
Questions are already being raised about how this happened. Governor Johnson Sakaja said the building had county approval to be constructed, but it had no occupation certificate. Even so, its ground floor was already in use, which means people were inside when it fell.
Nairobi’s police commander has said that whoever authorised the structure will be charged.
The collapse comes only days after another building, which housed Club Avenida on Moi Avenue, came down in the city centre.
It also follows the South C collapse in January. Together, the three incidents have put building approvals, site supervision and enforcement under fresh scrutiny.
For now, the focus remains on the rescue. Families have gathered near the site, hoping for more survivors. The pregnant woman’s condition has not yet been confirmed, and further updates are expected from the hospital and the authorities.
