The South African club, regulars on the continental stage, were held to a goalless draw in the first leg before another stalemate in the return match. The sides drew 1-1 in South Africa, a result that was not enough to keep Mamelodi Sundowns in the competition.

Wiliete SC advanced on the away-goals rule, which remains in use in this tournament. Their goal in South Africa proved decisive and secured their place in the next round.

The result brings Mamelodi Sundowns’ continental campaign to an unexpectedly early end. Wiliete SC, meanwhile, produced a notable result by eliminating one of African football’s best-known clubs and can now target a place in the group stage.
