Kenya Gets Eight Refurbished MD500 Helicopters In A Strong Three Nation Deal To Fight Terror Threats
The Kenya Defence Forces has received eight refurbished MD500 military helicopters in a deal that brings together Kenya and the United States and South Korea. The aircraft were handed over on Friday at the Kenya Army Aviation Command in Embakasi in Nairobi.
South Korea provided the aircraft while the United States supported their refurbishment. Washington also helped install advanced digital systems and trained Kenyan pilots and technicians to fly and maintain the machines.
The MD500 is a light American helicopter used for surveillance and troop support. Some versions carry weapons for armed reconnaissance and light attacks. Its small size lets it operate in tight spaces.
Kenya runs one of the largest fleets of MD500 series helicopters in Africa. The country uses them in Somalia and for border surveillance.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya said the helicopters will improve the military’s ability to gather intelligence and provide air support. She said they will also help move personnel and respond to security threats.
“This milestone reflects Kenya’s commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities through strategic partnerships and international cooperation,” Tuya said.
Chief of the Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri said the aircraft will support counterterrorism operations and other missions such as humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping.
He also announced plans to build supporting infrastructure and operational facilities including Kenya Air Force sites outside Nairobi. These will help the country operate and maintain its military aircraft.
South Korean Ambassador Kang Hyung-shik said the transfer reflects growing diplomatic economic and security ties between the two nations. They established relations in 1964.
U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Susan Burns said the partnership will help tackle security threats in East Africa and support peacekeeping missions. She called it security cooperation at its best.
