Julius Malema filmed buying items inside a South African owned spaza shop

EFF leader Julius Malema has been filmed inside a South African owned spaza shop, where he bought items, drawing attention amid previous criticism of his views on the debate over foreign owned spaza shops. In June 2026, Malema argued that South Africans should focus on ownership of major industries such as mines rather than concentrating on foreign nationals running small township shops. The latest footage has prompted questions about the contrast between those earlier remarks and his appearance at a locally owned spaza shop.

One thing the post leaves open is what Malema bought and how much he spent, since the clip does not set out the items he purchased or whether he commented on the shop’s ownership. The post also does not say where the shop is located or when the footage was recorded. Those details matter because they would establish the context of the visit. Without them, the clip shows only Malema inside the shop, and the connection between his purchase and his earlier remarks remains a matter of interpretation.

People reacting to the post questioned the contrast between his earlier remarks and his appearance at a locally owned spaza shop, with some saying the visit showed a shift in emphasis and others saying buying from a South African shop was consistent with supporting local ownership. Some said the footage did not prove any change in his position, while others said the visit raised questions about whether he was responding to criticism.

What remains unresolved is whether Malema has explained the visit or responded to the questions about his earlier remarks. The post does not establish whether he was there to support local businesses or simply to buy items, and the footage alone cannot show his reasons. The public is waiting for more information, because the visit has drawn attention to the debate over spaza shop ownership without any confirmation of what it signified.
