Heavy Security Presence at Abuja City Gate Ahead of Obi-Kwankwaso Mega March
According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, October 24, 2026, security operatives and armoured military vehicles have been deployed around Abuja City Gate ahead of a planned mega march by supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The deployment, observed early Saturday morning, included personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Other security operatives were also reportedly present at the location.
Reports from the scene indicated that officers had established barricades around the City Gate and were conducting stop-and-search operations on vehicles and individuals passing through the area. The measures appeared aimed at maintaining public order and preventing possible security breaches during the planned gathering.
The presence of armoured tanks and multiple security agencies created a heightened security atmosphere around the entrance to Nigeria’s capital. The area had reportedly been cordoned off as preparations for the march continued.
The demonstration was organised by supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso, who were expected to participate in a joint procession within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The planned march is intended to draw attention to demands for improved governance in the country.
However, as of the time of reporting, no official statement had been provided by the security agencies explaining the full details of the deployment or outlining specific concerns that prompted the extensive security arrangements.
The operation comes amid growing political activities and preparations ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The presence of security personnel at strategic locations in Abuja highlights the authorities’ apparent concern about maintaining order during politically significant gatherings.
It remains unclear how the deployment will affect the movement of participants and other residents around the City Gate, or whether additional restrictions will be introduced as the march proceeds.
Further developments are expected as the organisers, security agencies and other relevant authorities respond to the situation.
