Government Reveals Number of People Still Missing After Eastleigh Building Collapse
Seven people have been reported missing following the collapse of a multi-storey building under construction in Eastleigh, Nairobi.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the development during a visit to the disaster scene on Saturday, October 24.
Murkomen was accompanied by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku as authorities assessed the situation and coordinated ongoing rescue operations.
According to the Interior CS, 67 construction workers were at the site when the building suddenly collapsed, triggering an emergency response.
He confirmed that all 67 workers had been accounted for, with 66 escaping the incident without sustaining injuries.
However, one construction worker sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
The injured worker was reported to be in stable condition as medical personnel continued providing necessary care.
Despite ccounting for all construction workers, authorities confirmed that seven other people remained missing following the devastating incident.
Murkomen revealed that several businesses operating within the building were occupied when the structure came crashing down.
Eleven shops located on the ground floor and basement were reportedly occupied at the time of the collapse.
The presence of people inside these businesses has complicated the rescue operation, with authorities working to establish their whereabouts.
Rescue teams have reportedly established contact with some of the missing individuals believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.
Efforts are underway to reach those individuals and safely evacuate anyone still trapped inside the collapsed structure.
A multi-agency team comprising government officers and emergency responders has been deployed to coordinate search and rescue operations.
The operation involves several agencies working together to locate survivors and provide immediate assistance to affected individuals.
Emergency personnel continue clearing debris carefully, hoping to reach anyone who might still be alive beneath the collapsed building.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about construction safety and regulatory compliance in Nairobi’s rapidly expanding Eastleigh neighbourhood.
Authorities have promised investigations to establish what caused the building to collapse and determine whether construction regulations were followed.
The National Construction Authority has also identified professionals and contractors associated with the collapsed structure as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, government agencies have urged residents and members of the public to avoid the affected area.
The restriction is intended to give emergency responders sufficient space to conduct rescue operations without unnecessary interference.
As the search continues, families and relatives of the missing individuals are anxiously awaiting updates from authorities.
The government has pledged to provide further information as rescue teams make progress and establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
