Gideon Moi Breaks Silence After Meeting Kalenjin Elders Ahead of 2027 Elections
KANU chairman Gideon Moi has broken his silence on his political relationship with President William Ruto after meeting Kalenjin elders and community representatives at his Kabarak home in Nakuru County.
During the meeting on Friday, October 23, 2026, Moi accused Ruto of failing to honour commitments he said were made during negotiations that led him to withdraw from the Baringo senatorial by-election in 2025.
Moi said he had agreed to step aside after the President assured him that development projects affecting Baringo residents would receive attention. He maintained that his decision was not motivated by personal benefits but by the interests of the people he represented.
According to Moi, the promised projects remained incomplete despite repeated assurances that the agreement would be implemented. He said he had waited for the government to fulfil its commitments but had become increasingly frustrated by the delays.
The KANU leader also apologised to members of his community for agreeing to work with Ruto, saying he had acted in good faith when he decided not to contest the Senate seat.
“I did what I did with a clean heart,” Moi told the gathering, appealing to Kalenjin elders and residents to forgive him for his political decision.
His remarks marked a significant shift from the reconciliation meeting held at Kabarak in October 2025, when Ruto and Moi publicly presented their cooperation as a step toward political unity in the Rift Valley.
Moi also dismissed allegations that he was using the Standard Group, in which his family holds shares, to undermine the President through its news coverage. He insisted that the media organisation should be treated independently of his political disagreements.
The meeting comes as political leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the August 2027 General Election. Moi said he wanted his community’s prayers and support as he considered his next political direction.
He also asked elders to release him to pursue a different political path, signalling that his previous arrangement with Ruto may no longer guide his plans.
The meeting could have implications for political alliances in the Rift Valley, although Moi has not formally announced a new coalition or presidential bid.
His account of the agreement remains his own version of events, and Ruto’s response to the latest allegations will be important in clarifying the dispute.
