Ghanaians Blast Fmr. Information Minister For Telling Them to Vote Bawumia in 2028
Former Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar has declared her confidence in Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s chances of winning the 2028 presidential election, insisting that the former vice president has what it takes to secure victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Ms Abubakar, an NPP member, argued that Ghanaian voters would support Dr Bawumia based on their assessment of his record and the policies pursued by the previous NPP administration.
Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points programme on Saturday, October 24, 2026, she expressed the view that voters would make decisions based on their interests and would be unlikely to reject a candidate whose performance they consider beneficial to the country.
She maintained that Dr Bawumia would be a strong contender in the next general election, regardless of the individual the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) chooses to represent it.
The former minister’s remarks come as political figures from both parties begin to make their cases ahead of the 2028 presidential contest.
Ms Abubakar’s confidence in the former vice president appears to rest on her belief that the NPP’s record in government will remain an important consideration for voters. She also drew a distinction between the previous administration’s performance and that of the current government.
Dr Bawumia led the NPP into the 2024 presidential election but lost to the NDC candidate, John Dramani Mahama. The NPP is now seeking to regain the presidency, with Dr Bawumia remaining a key figure in its preparations for the next electoral contest.
For the NDC, the 2028 election will provide an opportunity to defend its mandate and demonstrate that its policies have delivered results for Ghanaians.
While Ms Abubakar has expressed certainty about Dr Bawumia’s prospects, the outcome of the next election will depend on several factors, including the performance of the government, the campaign strategies of the competing parties and the choices voters make.
Her prediction nevertheless reflects the optimism among NPP supporters that Dr Bawumia can lead the party back to power after its 2024 defeat.
