Da Cruz Fumes After Defeat: “We Should’ve Won 3-0 or 4-0” as Chiefs Crash Out Against Red Arrows
Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz has expressed his frustration after Amakhosi suffered a painful exit from the CAF Confederation Cup, insisting that his side created enough opportunities to win the encounter comfortably against Red Arrows.
Da Cruz was left disappointed by his team’s inability to convert their chances into goals after Chiefs faced the Zambian outfit in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round tie on Friday night.
The Soweto giants entered the match needing to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit following their defeat in Zambia. However, despite their efforts to fight back on home soil, Chiefs were unable to produce the clinical finishing required to secure progression.
Speaking after the encounter, Da Cruz maintained that his team had controlled proceedings and created numerous scoring opportunities but failed to make the most of them.
“We dominated all the game, we created a lot of chances,” Da Cruz said.
The Chiefs coach acknowledged that the outcome was particularly frustrating because he believed his players had done enough in open play to secure a convincing victory.
“We lost the game on penalties, but we actually lost it before because we created a lot of chances,” he added.
Da Cruz was especially critical of his team’s finishing, arguing that the number of opportunities created should have translated into a significantly more comfortable scoreline.
“We only scored one goal, normally we must win this game 3-0 or 4-0,” he said.
His comments highlight the attacking inefficiency that has continued to frustrate Amakhosi, with their inability to convert promising opportunities proving costly in a crucial continental fixture.
For Chiefs, the defeat represents another disappointing moment in their campaign, particularly after the team had the opportunity to use home advantage to overturn the first-leg result and keep their hopes of reaching the group stages alive.
Da Cruz’s assessment also raises questions about the team’s composure in front of goal, an area that could require urgent attention as the club shifts its focus towards its domestic commitments.
While creating chances is an important part of attacking football, converting them remains decisive in knockout competitions, where missed opportunities can ultimately determine a team’s fate.
The result will undoubtedly disappoint Chiefs supporters, who had hoped to see their side deliver a strong response after the first-leg setback in Zambia.
Da Cruz’s remarks make his frustration clear: he believes Amakhosi created enough opportunities to win comfortably but ultimately paid the price for failing to turn their dominance into goals.
