Breaking: Another Senior ANC Member Has Announced His Resignation From The Party, Check Out

The African National Congress (ANC) leader in the City of Cape Town, Ndithini Tyhido, has resigned from his position as a councillor just days before the upcoming local government elections, according to a report published by Eyewitness News on Saturday, 24 October

Tyhido’s resignation comes amid a pending disciplinary process initiated by the Democratic Alliance (DA)-led City of Cape Town council over allegations that he failed to attend council-related meetings.

However, the ANC leader has denied that the disciplinary proceedings were responsible for his decision to step down, insisting that his resignation was motivated by his desire to focus on the party’s election campaign.

According to Eyewitness News, Tyhido said he had never been formally charged with failing to attend council or council committee meetings.

He acknowledged that a disciplinary process had been initiated concerning his alleged non-attendance at virtual subcouncil meetings but argued that the rules governing council and committee meetings did not apply in the same way to subcouncil meetings.

Tyhido also accused the DA of using the disciplinary process to embarrass an ANC leader, describing the proceedings as politically motivated.

He maintained that he was unwilling to spend time engaging with what he considered an unnecessary political dispute when he could instead dedicate his efforts to campaigning for the ANC ahead of the elections.

The resignation marks a significant development for the ANC in Cape Town as political parties prepare for the upcoming local government elections. Tyhido has served as the party’s metro caucus leader and has been a prominent voice in its opposition to the DA-led municipal administration.

He assumed the leadership role in 2025 following the resignation of former ANC caucus leader Banele Majingo, who left the party and joined the DA.

At the time, the ANC described Tyhido’s appointment as a strategic decision aimed at strengthening its leadership in the City of Cape Town council and advancing its political programme.

During his tenure, Tyhido frequently criticised the DA-led administration over issues affecting residents, including service delivery, housing, infrastructure and the treatment of working-class communities.

His departure from council comes at a particularly important moment for the ANC as it seeks to mobilise supporters and strengthen its campaign ahead of the municipal elections.

Although Tyhido is stepping down as a councillor, his comments indicate that he intends to remain politically active by concentrating on the ANC’s campaign activities.

The dispute surrounding his alleged failure to attend meetings has also highlighted tensions between the ANC and the DA-led municipal administration. While the disciplinary process was reportedly pending, Tyhido has rejected the allegations as politically motivated and disputed the basis on which the proceedings were initiated.

Neither his resignation nor his allegations against the DA establish that the disciplinary process was unlawful. The circumstances surrounding the matter remain subject to the available evidence and the accounts of the parties involved.

For now, Tyhido’s immediate focus appears to be on supporting the ANC’s electoral efforts rather than continuing to serve in the council.

His resignation adds another development to Cape Town’s political landscape ahead of the local government elections, with attention now turning to how the ANC will manage its leadership responsibilities and campaign activities in the final days before voting.
