Adwoa Safo’s Aide Reveals Why Former MP Is Returning to NPP Primaries
An aide to former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo has defended her decision to return to the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primaries, arguing that her electoral record and years of service justify another attempt to represent the constituency.
Nana Dubin Kwapong said Adwoa Safo helped strengthen the NPP’s support base during her 12 years as MP and believes she still has more to contribute ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking to Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Friday, October 23, Kwapong cited parliamentary election figures from Dome-Kwabenya to support his argument. He said the NPP’s vote increased from 63,373 in 2012 to 63,488 in 2016 and 75,041 in 2020.
Kwapong argued that the figures demonstrated Adwoa Safo’s contribution to the party’s performance in the constituency. He also recalled that the NPP’s vote tally had been around 35,000 before she became the party’s parliamentary candidate.
He said discussions and consultations had taken place before she decided to return to the contest after not participating in the NPP’s 2024 parliamentary primary.
“Subsequent to that, a lot of discussions, a lot of deliberations, a lot of consultations have gone on, and it has become very necessary that she comes and contests the primaries in Dome-Kwabenya on the ticket of the NPP,” he said.
Kwapong also addressed criticism of Adwoa Safo’s prolonged absence from Parliament and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection between 2021 and 2022.
He maintained that the absence was linked to a family matter that required her attention. Adwoa Safo had previously cited personal and family issues, including caring for her son, and later apologised to the NPP, Parliament and the Ghanaian public.
Kwapong argued that the episode should not continue to define her political career, saying she had already explained herself and apologised.
“I believe that we have crossed that bridge. She came back, she apologised, and then we moved on,” he said.
He further alleged that issues surrounding the constituency album during the 2024 primary affected the contest, claiming that the process gave the eventual winner an opportunity to influence its contents. That allegation was not independently established in the information provided.
Adwoa Safo announced on Thursday, October 22, that she intended to contest the NPP’s Dome-Kwabenya primary ahead of the 2028 elections. She said her decision followed consultations with party leaders, executives and other stakeholders.
The NPP lost the parliamentary seat in the 2024 general election. Adwoa Safo will have to secure the party’s nomination before seeking to represent it in 2028.
