8 Ukambani MPs Who Are Currently Allied With President William Ruto’s Government

Ukambani is considered a traditional stronghold of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. Most leaders from the region are usually elected under his party. Currently, most Ukambani leaders have rallied behind Kalonzo as he seeks the presidential seat in the upcoming general election. However, there are eight MPs from the region who are backing President William Ruto’s re-election bid. The eight are:

Mutuse is the MP for Kibwezi West, located in Makueni County. He was elected in the 2022 General Election on the Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) ticket, which was led by Alfred Mutua. He has, however, defected to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which he intends to use for his re-election bid.

He was elected the MP for Mwala constituency on a UDA ticket in the last polls. He has remained a member of the ruling party and is expected to use its ticket to seek re-election in 2027. Kawaya has been drumming up support for President Ruto in the Ukambani region, stating that the Head of State has brought many development projects to the Ukambani region.

The Machakos Town MP was also elected on the MCC ticket, which is under the banner of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance. He has remained allied with Ruto, supporting the president for a second term.

He is the MP for Masinga Constituency in Machakos County. Mwalyo was elected as an independent candidate in 2022. He later decided to work with Ruto’s government, and he is supporting the president’s re-election bid.

The Kangundo MP won the seat in 2022 under the Grand Dream Development Party (GDDP). The party was not in any coalition at the time. It later signed a post-election alliance with Kenya Kwanza. Muli is currently supporting President Ruto to win the next election.

Basil was elected the MP for Yatta on a Wiper ticket in 2022. However, he decided to work with the Kenya Kwanza administration, stating that he wants national development projects for his constituents. Basil has remained allied with Ruto even though Kalonzo is in the presidential race.

He was elected in 2022 to represent Kitui East Constituency on a UDA ticket. He is still aligned with Ruto and supporting his re-election bid. Mbai has also been strengthening UDA in the Ukambani region.

She is the MP for Kitui South in Kitui County. Nyamai was elected on a Jubilee Party ticket in 2022. However, she decided to align with President Ruto’s administration. Even though she has not declared the party she will use in the 2027 election, Nyamai is backing Ruto’s re-election bid.
