Zwane Refuses To Call Himself A Legend And Reveals The Player He Looks Up To Most

AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane has named the late John “Shoes” Moshoeu as his all-time favourite football legend, explaining that the former Bafana Bafana star set an example through his performances, leadership and commitment to the game.

In an interview published in the latest edition of Soccer Laduma, Zwane questioned how freely the word “legend” is used in South African football. Despite his own achievements as a player, the coach said he did not consider himself worthy of the title, believing other figures had made a greater impact.

For Zwane, Moshoeu stands out because of the influence he had at club and international level. The two shared a dressing room at Kaizer Chiefs under the late coach Ted Dumitru, where they won titles together.

Zwane compared the lasting influence of football greats such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo with Moshoeu’s impact on the teams he represented.

“You have guys like (Lionel) Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Everywhere they play, you still see their shining light. Their impact is everywhere. Those are legends. That’s why my all-time (legend) will always be John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu,” Zwane told Soccer Laduma.

He recalled Moshoeu’s influence at Giant Blackpool, his spell at Kaizer Chiefs before moving to Turkey, and his contribution to the national team.

Zwane also highlighted the veteran midfielder’s professionalism after returning to Chiefs late in his career. He said Moshoeu was around 38 or 39 years old at the time but continued to train intensely and lead by example.

“When we were in training, he was leading by example. So, I respect such, and I wanted to be that example as well,” Zwane said.

Moshoeu, who became one of South Africa’s recognised football figures, is remembered for his skill and contribution to the national side. Zwane’s comments underline the importance he places on influence and consistency, rather than reputation alone, when judging a player’s legacy.

The AmaZulu coach also named Donald “Ace” Khuse as another player he respects. Khuse represented Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, earning Zwane’s admiration for his impact across South African football.

For Zwane, Moshoeu’s example remains the standard by which he measures a true legend of the game.
