‘We Warned Him Many Times’ — Bauchi Mosque Explains Imam’s Removal Over Alleged Tinubu Campaign

According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday October 22, 2026, the management committee of Masjid Abdullahi Bin Zubbair in Madina Quarters, Bauchi State, has removed its Imam, Dahiru Abubakar, following allegations that he used religious sermons to promote President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The committee also rejected an alleged proposal by the cleric to rename the mosque after the president, insisting that the religious centre should retain its existing name.

According to a report by Daily Trust, the committee’s chairman, Abubakar Jibrin, confirmed Abubakar’s removal, saying the Imam had repeatedly been cautioned against engaging in political activities within the mosque.

Jibrin alleged that the cleric had used sermons delivered after obligatory prayers to defend Tinubu’s administration and encourage support for another presidential term.

The Imam was reportedly accused of telling worshippers that the president should not be blamed for Nigeria’s insecurity and deserved re-election in 2027.

The committee’s decision followed another instance in which Abubakar allegedly made similar political remarks after the early morning Subhi prayer on Sunday. Jibrin also raised concerns over claims that the Imam had been gathering people inside and outside the mosque to discuss political matters.

“We have warned him not once or twice but many times, but he didn’t heed our pleas,” Jibrin said.

He added, “We vehemently rejected the use of the mosque for political meetings.”

The dispute also involved an alleged suggestion by the Imam to change the mosque’s name from Masjid Abdullahi Bin Zubbair to Masjid Imam Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The committee reportedly turned down the proposal, maintaining that the mosque belonged to the local community and should not be renamed after a political figure.
