Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has accused President Bola Tinubu of making every Nigerian poor by 300 per cent through the devaluation of the naira, saying the policy has turned Nigeria into “the poverty capital of the world.”
Obasanjo spoke on Wednesday at the Financial Times Africa Summit 2026 in London, United Kingdom.
He said the naira lost its value overnight due to economic reforms undertaken by the Tinubu administration in 2023.
The statesman argued, “We do not live in isolation as a country. We interact with the rest of the world. And overnight, you devalue the currency by 300 per cent. The naira went from N500 to a dollar to N1,500 to a dollar. What that meant was that every Nigerian is made poor by 300 per cent.”
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes’ home in Cheshire, England, was burgled while he was in Italy with his club for a match against Como, the BBC reports on Thursday.
The burglary occurred on Wednesday evening, October 21, while the 32-year-old midfielder was away for Manchester United’s game against the Italian side.
According to the BBC, Fernandes’ family were not at home when the intruders broke in, and the suspects spent less than five minutes inside before police arrived.
Cheshire Police confirmed to the BBC that officers responded to reports of suspicious activity after a caller reported seeing “three unknown men in the rear garden of a neighbouring property”.
The Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr Jean Kaseya, has blamed the lack of interest among some international partners for the unavailability of vaccines for the latest Ebola outbreak, warning that African countries must unite to contain the disease.
Kaseya said African countries, including Nigeria, were mobilising resources and working with international partners to strengthen the response, urging leaders to avoid politicising the outbreak or blaming one another.
He said the continent needed greater investment in vaccine development, local manufacturing, diagnostics and medicines to prevent Africa from being left behind in future outbreaks.
The Africa CDC chief spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday.
