The Plot Thickens: Mogotsi’s Phone Record Demand Threatens to Blow Vosloorus Shooting Case Wide Open

BREAKING NEWS: Brown Mogotsi Back in Court as Explosive Vosloorus Shooting Case Takes Another Turn

Self-proclaimed political fixer Brown Mogotsi returned to the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 23 October 2026, as his criminal case linked to an alleged staged assassination attempt in Vosloorus continues to attract attention.

Mogotsi faces serious charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, perjury, discharging a firearm in a built-up area and defeating the ends of justice. The allegations stem from a shooting incident in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, in November 2025.

According to the State’s allegations, Mogotsi staged an attack on himself by allegedly firing shots at his own vehicle before reporting that unknown gunmen had targeted him. The allegations have not been proven in court, and the case remains subject to the legal process.

Friday’s appearance was expected to focus on the defence’s efforts to obtain additional information and evidence from the prosecution before the matter can proceed towards trial.

Mogotsi’s legal team has argued that it needs further particulars to prepare an adequate defence. Among the information requested are cellphone records relating to State witnesses, employment records for one witness, proof of residence for two witnesses, unredacted witness statements and images extracted from video footage connected to the alleged shooting.

The defence maintains that the information is important in assessing the credibility of witnesses, checking their whereabouts and identifying possible inconsistencies in the State’s version of events.

The prosecution, however, has raised concerns about responding to the defence’s latest application, with State prosecutor Thami Mpekana indicating that the application had only been brought to the State’s attention on Friday morning.

The court subsequently postponed the matter to 13 November 2026 to allow the State to respond to an affidavit submitted by the defence. The postponement means that the legal dispute over access to further information remains unresolved.

Mogotsi has been in custody since his arrest in May 2026. His previous attempts to secure bail have been unsuccessful, with the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court rejecting his fourth bail application in September.

His criminal case has also drawn public interest amid separate allegations raised at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry concerning alleged political interference and links between individuals in political and law-enforcement circles. Those matters are distinct from the criminal charges being dealt with in court.

For now, the immediate focus remains on the outstanding disclosure issues and the steps required before the case can progress towards trial.

The next appearance on 13 November is expected to provide further clarity on the defence’s application and the prosecution’s response.

As proceedings continue, Mogotsi remains an accused person, and the allegations against him must be tested through the courts before any finding of guilt can be made.
