Switzerland Breaks Silence As Swiss Diplomat’s Wife Tests Positive For Ebola In Nigeria
According to a report by The Punch on Friday, October 23, 2026, the Swiss government has broken its silence regarding the 42-year-old Ugandan-born woman who recently tested positive for Ebola in Nigeria, marking the country’s first confirmed case in over a decade.
According to Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the patient is the wife of a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja.
Official statements reveal that the woman tested positive on October 20 after spending about a week at a private clinic in Abuja exhibiting symptoms.
Authorities believe she contracted the virus while travelling in Uganda approximately two weeks prior. Records from the World Health Organisation show she returned to Abuja on October 3 after being away in Uganda since September 16.
Her husband, who travelled alongside her, has been placed in strict isolation as a precautionary measure, though health officials confirmed he has not developed any symptoms.
Meanwhile, the exact source of the infection remains shrouded in uncertainty as investigators continue to retrace her movements and potential exposures.
Ugandan officials maintain that she travelled through eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo prior to entering Uganda.
However, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the WHO have clarified that no verified information exists to confirm her visit to the DRC.
Medical teams report that the patient remains hospitalised, with her biochemical markers showing steady improvement. The current Nigerian case stems from the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which initially surfaced in the DRC in May.
In response, health authorities and international bodies are intensifying efforts to track down individuals who may have come into contact with the patient, while the Federal Government has alerted states to heighten health readiness.
