Speaker Bagbin Reaffirms Commitment To Enacting Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill Into Law
According to recent reports, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has firmly reiterated that Ghana’s controversial Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill will become law during his tenure, following a planned parliamentary review to fix legislative errors.
Speaking at the IPR Ghana 2026 National PR Conference and Excellence Awards in Koforidua on Friday, October 23, 2026, Bagbin revealed that Parliament will reconsider the bill in its upcoming session. He explained that mistakes had been identified in the text previously passed by lawmakers, largely stemming from last-minute amendments introduced during a rushed process that took place in his absence.
The Speaker stressed that rectifying these procedural and drafting errors is essential before the legislation can proceed through the final stages. He emphasized that the anti-LGBTQ+ bill should be treated as a non-partisan issue of broad national consensus rather than a political tool belonging to any single party.
“This bill will become the law of the land for as long as I remain in office,” Bagbin declared, signaling his unwavering determination to finalize the legislative process.
During his address, Speaker Bagbin also commended Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, for his prominent role and advocacy during parliamentary debates on the bill, noting that his contributions had represented Ghana well on the stage.
As Parliament prepares to revisit the legislation, the bill continues to draw significant national and international scrutiny. Supporters frame the measure as a necessary protection of traditional values and culture, while human rights advocates raise concerns about its implications for civil liberties and social cohesion across Ghanaian society.
