SA woman who left for Malawi now works in construction with her husband
Nokwazi Ncuku, the South African woman who chose to leave the country with her Malawian partner during the anti-immigration protests earlier this year, is now reportedly working in the construction industry in Malawi.
Ncuku, who is from Bizana in the Eastern Cape, first drew attention when she stayed near Sherwood Hall in Durban with groups of foreign nationals facing pressure to leave South Africa. Instead of remaining behind, she decided to follow her partner, Rasheed, back to his home country.
In August the couple married in a Nikah ceremony in Mangochi. Ncuku converted to Islam and is now known as Amirah. At the time she shared videos saying she was happy and at peace in her new life.
The latest reports say the couple are busy with construction work. They are doing plumbing and painting jobs together. Details about their exact employers or specific projects are still limited, but the news has sparked fresh interest online, with many people commenting that she seems to be settling in well.
Ncuku’s story has been followed closely since she left South Africa. Some praised her for standing by her partner, while others questioned the decision. For now, the couple appear to be building a new life far from the tensions that pushed them across the border.
