Ruto Appointee Dumps Government to Join Gachagua and Reveals His Next Move Ahead of 2027
Kenya’s High Commissioner to India, Peter Munyiri, has been linked to a political shift after meeting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and expressing interest in joining his party.
Gachagua announced the development on Wednesday, October 21, after hosting Munyiri at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri. He said the economist had joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), which is preparing for the 2027 General Election.
The announcement has drawn attention because President William Ruto appointed Munyiri to the diplomatic post in 2023. His responsibilities also covered Sri Lanka and the Maldives, placing his reported political move under scrutiny.
Before entering diplomacy, Munyiri built a career in the banking sector. He previously served as chief executive of Family Bank and has experience in economics and financial services.
Gachagua has also announced plans to return to Nyeri politics and contest the county governorship in 2027. Munyiri’s reported association with DCP could therefore become relevant to the party’s preparations in the region, although his precise political role has not been established.
However, joining or expressing support for a political party does not automatically confirm that a public officer has resigned from government service. At the time of reporting, confirmation of Munyiri’s formal resignation from his diplomatic position had not been established.
The distinction is important because public officers seeking elective positions must comply with the legal requirements governing resignation and political activity. Any future candidacy would depend on the applicable rules and deadlines.
Munyiri’s reported move comes amid political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as leaders reassess their affiliations and consider new political platforms. His next steps will become clearer once his employment status and intentions are formally confirmed.
