“Normally, We Should Have Won 3-0 or 4-0” – Fernando Da Cruz Reacts to Kaizer Chiefs’ Defeat
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has expressed his disappointment following the team’s defeat to Red Arrows in the CAF Confederation Cup, insisting that Amakhosi created enough chances to win the match comfortably.
Chiefs entered the return leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium determined to overturn their 1-0 defeat in the first leg in Zambia. The Soweto giants managed to secure a 1-0 victory in regulation time, bringing the aggregate score to 1-1 and forcing the contest into a penalty shootout.
However, Amakhosi failed to secure the result they wanted, bringing their hopes of progressing to the group stage to a disappointing end. The defeat was particularly frustrating because the team had opportunities to score more goals during the match.
Speaking after the encounter, Da Cruz explained that his team had controlled much of the game and created several scoring opportunities but failed to make the most of them.
“We dominated the game, we created a lot of chances. We lost on penalties, but it seems we lost the game before because we created too many chances and only scored one goal. Normally, we should have won this game 3-0 or 4-0,” Da Cruz said.
His comments highlighted the main problem that affected Chiefs throughout the encounter: their inability to convert their dominance into goals.
Although the team managed to find the back of the net once, the coaching staff would have expected the players to take advantage of the opportunities they created. Scoring additional goals could have helped Chiefs avoid the uncertainty of a penalty shootout and secured their qualification within regulation time.
The result will be difficult for the club and its supporters to accept, especially after the players worked hard to recover from their first-leg deficit. Chiefs needed to win the return fixture to keep their continental ambitions alive, and they achieved that objective over 90 minutes, but the penalty shootout ultimately determined their fate.
Da Cruz’s assessment also reflects the importance of clinical finishing in knockout competitions. Controlling possession and creating chances can put a team in a strong position, but those efforts must be rewarded with goals.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the defeat raises questions about their efficiency in front of goal and their ability to take advantage of important opportunities when the pressure is at its highest.
The coach’s remarks suggest that he believes his players did enough to win the match comfortably but failed to deliver the finishing touch required.
With their CAF Confederation Cup campaign ending in disappointment, Amakhosi must now turn their attention to their other commitments and work on the weaknesses exposed by the encounter.
For Da Cruz and his technical team, improving the team’s finishing will be an important consideration as they look to help Chiefs become more effective in future matches.
