NDC Suspends Daniel Nortey Over Controversial Remarks on Obuasi SHTS S@xual Abuse Allegations

According to a report by TV3 Ghana on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended Daniel Nortey from all media appearances and public engagements representing the party, effective immediately, following comments he made about the sexual abuse allegations involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

In a statement issued by its National Communication Bureau, the party said its Communication Directorate had received Nortey’s remarks with serious concern and displeasure. The suspension reflects the party’s position that allegations involving sexual abuse, particularly those affecting children, must be treated with the utmost seriousness.

The NDC reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards sexual abuse and every form of sexual exploitation. It stressed that comments that downplay such allegations or weaken public understanding of their seriousness are unacceptable, especially when the safety, dignity and welfare of children are involved.

The party also acknowledged that Nortey had issued an unreserved apology for his comments. Although the NDC said it had accepted the apology, it maintained that public figures and party communicators must exercise caution and responsibility when discussing sensitive issues.

According to the statement, discussions surrounding sexual abuse allegations must demonstrate sensitivity, respect for due process and consideration for those affected. The party warned against treating such matters casually or turning them into arguments driven by political interests.

As a result, the Communication Directorate has barred Nortey from appearing in the media or participating in public engagements on the party’s behalf until further notice. However, the NDC has not announced when the suspension will be reviewed or whether additional disciplinary measures will follow.

The party concluded by reaffirming its commitment to protecting women and children, promoting accountability and ensuring that allegations of sexual abuse are addressed in accordance with the law. It emphasised that such cases deserve careful handling rather than being dismissed or used for partisan exchanges.

The decision comes amid continued public attention surrounding the allegations involving the Obuasi SHTS headmaster. The issue has generated calls for responsible public discussion and proper procedures to protect young people while ensuring that allegations are investigated fairly.

The NDC Communication Directorate is yet to provide a timeline for reviewing Nortey’s suspension.
