Nairobi Woman Narrates the Last Phone Call With Kin Trapped in EastLeigh Rubble
A woman has shared an emotional account of her attempts to reach a relative believed to have been trapped beneath the rubble after a building collapsed in Eastleigh, Nairobi, on Friday, October 23.
The woman, identified as Aisha Dawe Jilo, rushed to the scene after learning about the incident. As rescue teams worked to locate people who might have been inside the building, she recounted how she had managed to communicate with her relative despite the difficult circumstances.
According to Aisha, she spoke to the relative at around 1:47 pm, shortly after the building came down. She later managed to reach him again at approximately 3:07 pm, raising hopes that he was still alive beneath the debris.
The communication reportedly left the family desperate for rescuers to reach him as quickly as possible. With the building reduced to rubble, relatives could only wait anxiously while emergency teams worked to access the affected sections.
Aisha explained that the family had informed their inspector, identified as Nur, who subsequently contacted the relevant government authorities for assistance.
The incident also raised concern about other people who might have been inside the building when it collapsed. Among those feared trapped was a young woman known as Fate, who reportedly operated a shop on the ground floor.
As news of the collapse spread, relatives and members of the public gathered at the scene, hoping to receive updates about those whose whereabouts remained unknown.
Kenya Red Cross personnel and police officers were among the emergency responders who arrived to assist. Nairobi County also mobilised machinery to help clear the debris and support the rescue operation.
Speaking to TV47 Kenya, Aisha acknowledged the efforts being made by authorities as she continued to hope for the safe recovery of her relative.
Her account highlighted the distress experienced by families who manage to communicate with loved ones trapped in dangerous situations but cannot reach them physically.
Despite the uncertainty, Aisha appealed for prayers for those believed to be trapped inside the building and for the families waiting for news.
The building, which was under construction, collapsed along Yusuf Haji Avenue near Day to Day Supermarket on 9th Street in Eastleigh.
The incident prompted an emergency response as authorities worked to determine how many people had been affected and establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
As rescue efforts continued, families remained hopeful that their missing relatives would be found and brought to safety.
