Nairobi building rescue suspended after trapped victim issues warning
The multi-storey building collapsed on Friday, October 23, 2026, along 9th Street in the busy Eastleigh neighbourhood. The incident left a massive pile of concrete and debris, with several people feared trapped inside.
According to the Associated Press, rescuers heard someone calling for help before the voice later went silent. The development raised fresh concerns about the condition of those still buried beneath the rubble.
Emergency teams from several agencies were deployed to the scene. Excavators and other equipment were brought in to remove heavy debris and create access to areas where survivors could be trapped.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said some people inside the collapsed structure had been communicating with rescuers. Teams were carefully clearing the rubble to create space for oxygen to reach them.
One woman had been rescued and taken for medical attention, according to reports. However, the total number of people trapped remained unclear.
The operation faced challenges because of the scale of the collapse and concerns about the stability of the damaged structure.
Authorities had not confirmed that the entire rescue operation had been suspended. The search was still ongoing in the latest reports.
The disaster has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of construction safety regulations in Nairobi.
