Expected to put the area in the spotlight, the massive investment will introduce a well-planned smart city to the region, potentially contributing to major economic growth, job creation, and business opportunities.
During the official sod-turning ceremony for the development of the Next Welgepark suburb, Mothibeli stood alongside Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality Mayor Tumelo Thebe and Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality Mayor Conny Msibi.
Addressing the media at the construction site, Mothibeli said the development gives him an opportunity to give back to the community where he grew up while contributing to local economic development.
He stressed that the municipality’s thriving Special Economic Zone (SEZ) desperately needs modern residential facilities to complement it, attract investors, and create an enabling business environment.
“This project has nothing to do with the government. We have invested R2.8 billion of our own money, together with my partners. For the past nine years, I have been knocking on the doors of the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality, trying to make this project a reality,” Mothibeli said.
I was born and raised in QwaQwa, and although I went to KwaZulu-Natal for business opportunities, I have never forgotten where I come from. I am not here to chow money or enrich myself at the expense of the community. This is my hometown, and I am here because I believe in its potential and want to see it develop.
His motivation stems from a deeply personal struggle with the region’s current infrastructure.
I came to QwaQwa to bury my mother, but I struggled to find proper accommodation where I could sleep. That experience made me realise the urgent need for better accommodation facilities in my hometown. I want to invest in QwaQwa, contribute to its development and ensure that people who come here, whether for funerals, business or other purposes, can find decent places to stay. This is my home, and I want to be part of building a better future for our people, he said.
With residents hoping the project will create jobs, Mayor Tumelo Thebe detailed what the modern estate will offer.
He confirmed the development will feature a smart city, exclusive hotels, and other businesses while accommodating the taxi industry and providing services for ordinary citizens.
“We are investing in a smarter, more inclusive city, one that provides the infrastructure, services, and opportunities that our community needs to thrive. This budget is a promise to residents that we will build a city designed around their needs, prepared for the future, and committed to improving everyday life for everyone,” he said.
