MoMo Fintech Lab Moves to Zonal Hackathons After Nearly 1,000 Entries

The 2026 MoMo Fintech Lab program has entered its zonal hackathon and pitch stage, with selected innovators taking part in activities across Accra, Kumasi and Tamale.

Organized by MobileMoney Fintech Limited (MMFL), the initiative seeks to identify and support Ghanaian developers, students and early-stage startups building digital financial solutions.

The program attracted nearly 1,000 entries ahead of the September 30, 2026, application deadline, reflecting interest in developing technology to address financial needs.

More than 56 per cent of the submitted innovations focused on “Everyday Payments and Financial Access,” with proposed solutions aimed at improving transactions and access to financial services for merchants and consumers.

Following an initial screening process, selected applicants participated in a technical bootcamp to prepare them for the next stage. They are now progressing through one-day zonal hackathons involving technical assessments, live prototyping and presentations of their ideas.

Holding the sessions in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale is intended to broaden participation and give emerging technology talent outside the capital access to expert feedback and development support.

The zonal rounds offer participants an opportunity to refine their concepts, demonstrate their technical capabilities and explain how their solutions could address practical challenges in Ghana’s financial sector.

The program will conclude with a final Demo Day, where the overall winner will receive a GH¢100,000 grant. Continued mentorship will also be provided to help the winning team develop its concept into a commercially viable fintech business.

With support from regulatory stakeholders, including the Bank of Ghana, the initiative also aims to encourage innovation that aligns with Ghana’s evolving digital financial infrastructure and broader digital cedi framework.
