Meet Prof. Francis Kwesi Nkrumah – Kwame Nkrumah’s First Son Who Chose Medicine Over Politics

While his father, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, led Ghana to independence, his eldest son, Emeritus Professor Francis Kwesi Nkrumah, carved a distinct legacy in medicine and public health.

Born in 1935 to Dr. Nkrumah and Madam Fanny Miller of Elmina, Francis spent his early years separated from his father, who had left for the United States to further his studies. He excelled at St. Augustine’s College, and when his father returned and entered government, he brought Francis to Accra and secured him a scholarship to study medicine in Germany. He later specialized in paediatrics with further training in Boston.

When his father’s government was overthrown in the 1966 coup, Francis made a defining choice. He returned to Ghana and stayed, serving at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital instead of going into exile.

His most impactful work came at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, where he served as Director from 1990 to 1998. There, he expanded research capacity, including establishing Ghana’s first Biosafety Level 3 laboratory. His research focused on Burkitt’s lymphoma, a childhood cancer common in Africa, and strengthening public health systems.

He was instrumental in the global fight against polio, serving as Chairman of the African Regional Certification Commission. In 2016, the World Health Organization’s African Region honoured him for that contribution.

A founding member of the Paediatric Association of Ghana and the West African College of Physicians, and a former Vice President of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, he helped build institutions that still serve the nation.

Like his father, he believed in Pan-Africanism and preserved his father’s intellectual legacy, writing the foreword to the 2024 edition of The Revolutionary Thoughts of Kwame Nkrumah.
