Kalonzo Loosens Grip As Ukombozi Alliance Rewrites Rules To Woo Opposition Allies Wary Of His Ticket

The Ukombozi Alliance has revised its deed of agreement to attract opposition figures who are wary of Kalonzo Musyoka’s leadership ahead of the 2027 elections.

The coalition was formerly known as Azimio la Umoja One Kenya. It rebranded last month and has now moved to change the rules that govern it.

The key change removes a clause that automatically made the coalition party leader the presidential candidate. Critics said the arrangement locked in Kalonzo as the flag-bearer. It also kept potential partners away.

The amended agreement also creates deputy party leader positions. This widens the leadership structure beyond a single figurehead.

It now allows the alliance to form partnerships with other political formations. The move is framed as an effort to reduce fragmentation within the opposition.

The changes come amid ongoing challenges for the coalition. Several opposition leaders and parties have kept their distance from the Kalonzo-led vehicle. These include elements linked to the Linda Mwananchi movement and the Democracy for the Citizens Party.

Earlier name disputes have also complicated unity efforts. So did leadership transitions such as former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s exit from the council chair role.

The revisions signal an attempt to present Ukombozi as a more inclusive platform. By separating the party leader position from an automatic presidential ticket the coalition hopes to lower barriers for new entrants. It also wants to keep the organisation steady.

Whether the changes will win over the sceptics remains uncertain. Opposition realignments continue as parties position themselves for the next general election.

Unity is still elusive despite repeated calls for a common front against the ruling establishment. The updated rules mark a practical shift in how the coalition is built as it fights for support in a crowded political field.
