Int’l Hydropower Day 2026: Harness Nigeria’s Dams for Sustainable Energy, Engr Nimrod Urges

By Emmanuel Kwada Engineer Musa Nimrod has called on the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to maximise Nigeria’s dams and reservoirs for hydropower generation, describing the renewable energy source as vital to sustainable development, clean energy and inclusive economic growth.

Nimrod made the call as the Centre for Water and Environmental Development (CWED) and ENVIPLAN commemorated International Hydropower Day 2026, with a renewed emphasis on the need to harness the country’s abundant water resources for sustainable energy production. Speaking on the theme, “Hydropower for Sustainable Development: Advancing Clean Energy and Inclusive Growth,” Nimrod stressed the importance of developing existing dams and reservoirs through innovative technologies to expand electricity generation and support national development. He noted that Nigeria’s water resources offer significant opportunities for hydropower development, adding that modern technologies and digital innovations could improve the efficiency, reliability and sustainability of energy infrastructure. According to him, investing in hydropower would contribute to the transition towards cleaner energy while supporting economic activities, creating employment opportunities and improving access to electricity for communities across the country. Nimrod also emphasised the importance of adopting innovative approaches to water resource management and energy infrastructure development in a rapidly evolving digital world. He urged policymakers, engineers, environmental experts and private-sector investors to work together to identify opportunities for developing hydropower projects and improving the performance of existing facilities. The commemoration by CWED and ENVIPLAN highlights the relationship between responsible water resource management, renewable energy development and inclusive economic growth. Hydropower generates electricity by using the energy of flowing or falling water. As a renewable energy source, it can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels, although its environmental and social impacts must be carefully managed through proper planning and sustainable project development. Nimrod’s call reinforces the need for Nigeria to explore innovative ways of turning its water resources into reliable electricity, while ensuring that investments in hydropower deliver long-term benefits for communities, the economy and the environment. 📰 Get Latest News Updates Join our Telegram group and receive breaking and trending news updates directly on your phone.
