IFP eyes coalition in Msunduzi as Singh targets northern areas

The IFP is positioning itself to play a significant role in a coalition government in Msunduzi Municipality after the November 4 local government elections, with party treasurer-general Narend Singh predicting that no single party will secure an outright majority.

Singh, who is also the Deputy Minister of Fisheries, said the IFP was determined to win every ward in Pietermaritzburg’s Northern Areas, strengthening its bargaining position in a future coalition government.

Addressing party supporters at Northdale’s Truro Hall, Singh said the IFP was realistic about its electoral prospects and the likelihood of a coalition administration.

We are realists and not dreamers. We may not get a majority in Msunduzi, but we are going to win every ward in the Northern Areas.

“The more support we get, the more influence we will have in government,” he said.

Singh urged residents frustrated by deteriorating municipal services to use the elections to remove underperforming councillors and give the IFP an opportunity to turn the municipality around.

“You have seen the deterioration in Pietermaritzburg. Msunduzi is in ICU and, if you continue with the current government, it will die and nothing will be left for your children. The only political party that can rescue you is the IFP,” he said.

The Northdale gathering formed part of the IFP’s intensified campaign in Msunduzi, with the party deploying senior leaders to consolidate support ahead of the elections.

Among them was IFP Women’s Brigade senior leader Princess Phumzile Buthelezi.

Buthelezi assured supporters that the IFP would prioritise clean governance and accountability if elected to office.

“We are known for being honest, we don’t tolerate people who are corrupt,” she said.

IFP Msunduzi councillor Shameel Ally also appealed to residents to support the party, saying it would prioritise their grievances if it became part of the next municipal administration.

“Give the IFP a chance. The IFP has a track record in service delivery,” he said.
