Heavy Rains and Possible Floods Expected in 45 Counties Starting on This Date

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in 45 counties between October 22 and October 29, 2026, warning that thunderstorms in six counties could trigger flash floods.

In its weather advisory issued on Friday, October 23, the department said rain is expected in several regions, including parts of the Coast, northeastern Kenya, the Rift Valley, western Kenya and central areas.

The counties listed in the forecast are Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Meru, Embu, Baringo, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Homa Bay, Kajiado, Kakamega, Kericho, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kisii, Kisumu, Kitui, Laikipia, Machakos, Makueni, Migori, Murang’a, Nakuru, Nandi, Narok, Nyamira, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Siaya, Taita Taveta, Tharaka-Nithi, Trans Nzoia, Turkana, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga and West Pokot. Rain is also expected in some parts of Nairobi and Marsabit counties.

Kenya Met singled out Mandera, Wajir, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale as areas where isolated thunderstorms could result in flash flooding. Such floods can develop rapidly, especially in low-lying locations and areas with poor drainage.

People in the affected areas are advised to take precautions when travelling during heavy rainfall and avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges or rivers. Those living in areas prone to flooding should also monitor changing weather conditions and follow guidance from relevant authorities.

The department has also issued a warning for people using the Indian Ocean along the Kenyan Coast, where strong winds and rough sea conditions are expected.

East-south-easterly to south-south-westerly winds are forecast over coastal and offshore waters, with speeds ranging from four to 24 knots, equivalent to approximately two to 12 metres per second. Some locations could experience stronger winds.

Sea conditions are expected to vary from light to rough, with very rough waters possible in areas affected by stronger winds and higher waves.

Fishermen, mariners and operators of small vessels have been urged to exercise caution, particularly when operating in exposed waters. They are also advised to check official marine weather updates before setting out to sea.

The forecast covers October 22 to October 29, meaning weather conditions may differ across counties during the period. Kenyans are encouraged to keep track of updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department as the rainy conditions continue.
