Gov’t Issues Completion Timeline for Vihiga’s 10,000-Seater Kidundu Stadium

The government has set December 2026 as the target completion date for the 10,000-seater Kidundu Stadium in Vihiga County.

The government has set December 2026 as the target completion date for the 10,000-seater Kidundu Stadium in Vihiga County.

In an update on Friday, October 23, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi highlighted the significance of the project, noting that it would build on Vihiga’s cultural heritage while providing young people with opportunities to develop their talents.

“Vihiga County is celebrated for her rich heritage, scenic landscapes and granite resources. Now, a new landmark takes shape; promising to transform talent into opportunity and bequeath the young with a sporting legacy for ages to come,” he wrote.

According to Mwangi, Kidundu Stadium is designed to accommodate a FIFA-standard football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, modern changing rooms and VIP facilities.

The infrastructure is expected to provide a platform for nurturing athletes and footballers, while enabling Vihiga County to host major sporting competitions.

Beyond athletics and football, the facility will incorporate spaces intended to support young people working in technology, film, recording and other creative industries.

Mwangi said the project would combine sports infrastructure with facilities aimed at opening up additional opportunities for young creatives and innovators.

“Beyond sports, the facility is an integrated platform where ICT spaces, recording and film studios, innovation hubs and entrepreneurship centres are embedded to open new pathways for young creatives and innovators,” he added.

The project is also expected to contribute to economic activity in the county through employment opportunities and business for local suppliers during construction.

Mwangi said young people had secured jobs through the construction activities, while local businesses and suppliers had benefited from the project.

“With hundreds of jobs created for the youth and local businesses and supplies benefiting from construction activities, the facility rests right at the heart of Vihiga’s sports and economic transformation,” he further said.

Mwangi said the project reflected this wider national approach to sports development.

“Kidundu reflects the Government’s wider investment in sports infrastructure under President William Ruto, connecting athletic excellence and sporting greatness with economic empowerment,” he concluded.

Elsewhere, the upgrade of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya Town has entered its second phase, with the project expected to expand spectator capacity.

In an update on Thursday, October 22, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the modernisation project, launched by President William Samoei Ruto in January 2025, is progressing through a partnership between the national and county governments.

Omollo highlighted the project’s potential to transform the region’s sporting landscape, particularly as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“Nurturing grassroots football and athletics talent across Nyanza, the modernisation of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya Town is positioning the facility as a catalyst for sports tourism, regional tournaments and local enterprise, particularly as Kenya prepares to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations,” he wrote.

To ensure the facility meets international standards, the government placed the construction project under the Ministry of Defence, with Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) engineers overseeing the works.

Omollo explained the arrangement, noting the role of military engineers in delivering the stadium’s modern infrastructure.

“To deliver a facility that meets international standards, the project was placed under the Ministry of Defence, with Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) engineers undertaking construction,” he added.

Phase One of the project has delivered a FIFA-standard football pitch measuring 110 by 68 metres, VVIP lounges, modern changing rooms and an outdoor basketball court.

The second phase is focused on expanding the stadium’s spectator capacity from 5,500 to 20,000.

The expansion includes the construction of five new terraces and structural works for an all-round roof canopy designed to improve the facility’s suitability for large sporting events.

The stadium also features an eight-lane, 400-metre red-tartan athletics track, providing a venue for national, continental and international competitions.

Beyond sports, the government has highlighted the potential of the investment to provide constructive activities for young people while supporting safer communities and organised public events.

“Sports infrastructure also contributes to safer and more vibrant communities by providing young people with constructive opportunities while supporting organised public activity,” he concluded.
