Govt Appointee Allegedly Sacked For Selling Diplomatic Passport For $10,000—Wontumi Presenter Claims

A shocking allegation is causing a stir in Ghana’s political space.

Kumasi-based Wontumi FM presenter, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, has alleged that a government appointee has been sacked for engaging in the illegal sale of Ghanaian diplomatic and service passports.

According to the presenter, who made the claim on his #Wontuminews program, the appointee was allegedly caught selling the highly respected passports for $10,000 each.

“It is alleged that a government appointee has been sacked after he was caught selling diplomatic and service passports for $10,000,” Oheneba Nana Asiedu alleged.

Diplomatic and service passports are not ordinary passports. They are reserved for a special group of people, including the President, Ministers, Members of Parliament, top diplomats, judges, and other senior officials who travel on official state duties. Holders of these passports enjoy special privileges and visa-free access to many countries. Because of this, the issuance of such passports is supposed to be strictly controlled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If this allegation is true, it raises serious questions about national security and Ghana’s image abroad. Selling such powerful documents to unqualified persons could allow criminals, fraudsters, or other dangerous individuals to travel the world pretending to be Ghanaian officials.

As at now, government has not officially released the name of the appointee involved, the exact date of the alleged sacking, or any details of how the act was discovered. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also not issued any official statement to confirm or deny the claim.

However, this allegation comes at a time when the Ministry has been working hard to clean up the system. Just a few months ago, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the cancellation of over 700 diplomatic and service passports that were being held by former officials and other persons who were no longer entitled to hold them. That exercise was meant to protect the integrity of Ghana’s passports.

Many Ghanaians on social media are now calling on government to speak openly on this new allegation. They want to know who was involved, who bought the passports, and what steps are being taken to retrieve them.

For now, it remains an allegation by Oheneba Nana Asiedu, but one that many say government cannot ignore.
