Gospel Singer Tope Alabi Sets to Take Legal Action Over Alleged Defamatory Posts
According to report by Vanguard on Friday, October 23, 2026, popular Nigerian gospel singer, Evangelist Patricia Temitope Alabi, has warned social media users against publishing or circulating statements she considers false, misleading or defamatory, saying she is prepared to take legal action to protect her reputation.
The warning was contained in a public notice issued by her lawyers, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, and posted on the singer’s Instagram page on Friday, October 23, 2026.
According to the lawyers, Alabi, who has built a career spanning almost three decades, instructed them to take necessary legal steps against publications capable of damaging her personal, professional and spiritual reputation.
The legal team said their client had spent nearly 30 years establishing a reputation founded on integrity, honour and public confidence.
The lawyers expressed concern over what they described as harmful and untrue claims allegedly being circulated about the gospel artiste across social media and other platforms.
They warned that individuals involved in creating or spreading such material could face legal consequences, depending on the circumstances and relevant provisions of the law.
The notice particularly cautioned social media users against reposting, forwarding or otherwise amplifying defamatory content.
According to the lawyers, liability may not be limited to the original person who made a statement but could also extend to anyone who republishes or shares it.
They added that using anonymous, pseudonymous or unverified accounts would not automatically protect individuals from legal responsibility.
Those who had already published material considered defamatory were advised to remove the content immediately and desist from further circulation.
However, the lawyers stressed that deleting a post would not necessarily erase liability arising from its earlier publication.
The legal remedies available to Alabi, according to the notice, could include damages, injunctions restraining further publication, court-ordered retractions, public apologies and recovery of legal expenses.
The lawyers also said they had authority to commence legal proceedings against anyone whose actions amounted to an actionable claim, without issuing another warning.
However, the notice clarified that Alabi’s position was not intended to suppress legitimate criticism, truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest or the lawful exercise of freedom of expression.
No specific individual was named as a target of the threatened legal action.
The development highlights the increasing legal risks surrounding online publications involving public figures, particularly where claims are alleged to be damaging or unsubstantiated.
Alabi remains one of Nigeria’s prominent gospel musicians, with a significant following among Christian music lovers.
