Gospel Singer Tope Alabi Moves to Protect Reputation, Threatens Lawsuits Over Social Media Claims
According to report by Vanguard on Friday, October 23, 2026, popular Nigerian gospel singer, Evangelist Patricia Temitope Alabi, has warned social media users and other individuals against publishing or circulating statements she considers false, misleading or defamatory about her.
The warning was contained in a public notice issued by her lawyers, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, and shared on her Instagram page on Friday, October 23, 2026.
According to the legal team, Alabi instructed the firm to take necessary measures to protect her reputation from publications capable of damaging her personal, professional and spiritual image.
The lawyers said the gospel singer had spent almost 30 years building a reputation founded on integrity, honour and public confidence.
They expressed concern over what they described as false and harmful claims allegedly being circulated about Alabi on social media and other platforms.
The lawyers warned that anyone who originates such statements, as well as those who reproduce or amplify them, could face legal consequences depending on the circumstances and applicable laws.
They specifically cautioned social media users against reposting, sharing or forwarding potentially defamatory material, noting that legal responsibility may not be limited to the person who first made the allegation.
According to the notice, liability could extend to anyone who “repeats, republishes, reposts, shares, forwards or otherwise amplifies” the disputed statement, subject to the facts of each case and any available legal defence.
The legal team also warned that using anonymous, pseudonymous or unverified social media accounts would not automatically protect individuals from legal action.
Individuals who had already published material considered defamatory were urged to remove the posts immediately and desist from further circulation.
However, the lawyers noted that deleting a publication would not necessarily erase liability arising from its earlier dissemination.
The notice said Alabi could pursue remedies including damages, injunctions against further publication, court-ordered retractions, public apologies and recovery of legal costs.
The lawyers further stated that they had been authorised to commence legal proceedings against anyone whose conduct amounted to an actionable claim, without issuing another warning.
However, the notice clarified that the singer’s position was not intended to suppress legitimate criticism, truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest or lawful freedom of expression.
No specific individual was named as a target of legal proceedings in the notice.
The development underscores growing concerns over online defamation and the legal risks associated with publishing or spreading damaging allegations about public figures.
