Good News: Dada Reveals His Plan for SA’s Small Businesses

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says the city is deliberately creating new market opportunities to help small and medium-sized businesses grow, reach more customers and build sustainable enterprises.

Morero explained that the initiative forms part of the city’s broader effort to promote an inclusive economy by giving township businesses and informal traders better access to formal markets and established value chains.

The approach aims to help smaller enterprises move beyond operating within limited local markets and gain opportunities to supply goods and services through more structured business networks.

For many small business owners, access to customers, reliable markets and opportunities to expand remains a significant challenge. Creating pathways into formal value chains could help address some of these barriers and support long-term business growth.

The city’s focus also highlights the economic role of township enterprises and informal traders, many of whom contribute to local livelihoods and provide goods and services within their communities.

By developing new markets, the City of Johannesburg hopes to create an environment where smaller businesses can participate more meaningfully in economic activity rather than struggle to compete for limited opportunities.

However, the long-term impact of the initiative will depend on how effectively these opportunities reach business owners and translate into actual sales, sustainable operations and job creation.

Morero’s position signals a push towards making economic opportunities more accessible to businesses that have traditionally faced difficulties entering formal markets.

For Johannesburg’s small businesses, the key question will be whether these efforts can deliver practical opportunities that support lasting growth.
