Ghanaians angry after MCE disrespects former Vice President

A Municipal Chief Executive, an appointee who is supposed to be a father for all in his municipality, has decided to throw respect out of the window. He has been captured calling Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia a “toilet commissioner.”

Let’s get the facts right. Dr. Bawumia is not just any man on the street.

He was the Vice President of Ghana for 8 years. He was the head of our Economic Management Team. He is a former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. He is a PhD holder. Whether you like his politics or not, you must respect the office he held.

So why are you calling him a toilet commissioner?

We all know where this insult is coming from. When Dr. Bawumia was Vice President, he championed the construction of toilet facilities across Ghana to fight open defecation. It was a sanitation project. Some people loved it, some people laughed at it.

But to use that project to reduce a whole former Vice President to a “toilet commissioner” is childish, disrespectful, and shameful.

An MCE should be talking about roads, schools, jobs, and development in his municipality. Instead, he is doing dirty politics and insults. Is that what President Mahama appointed you to do?

You are an MCE today because of politics. Tomorrow you will not be an MCE. But the title of Former Vice President will follow Dr. Bawumia for life.

You can disagree with Bawumia. You can say his policies failed. You can say he didn’t build enough toilets as he promised. That is politics. Ghanaians will listen.

But when you insult his personality and call him names, you lose the moral right to lead anyone.

If we allow MCEs to insult former Vice Presidents like this, what are we teaching our children? That once you get small power, you can insult anyone?

The MCE must apologize. Not to NPP. Not to Dr. Bawumia alone. But to the office of the Vice President of Ghana.

We can do better politics. We MUST do better.
