Fresh Details Emerge As Health Minister Reveals Genomic Link Between Nigeria And Kenya Ebola Cases

According to a report by The Punch on Friday, October 23, 2026, the Federal Government has broken its silence on the ongoing Ebola response, disclosing that genomic sequencing results reveal a close genetic relationship between Nigeria’s confirmed case and a virus strain identified in Kenya.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, made this revelation alongside the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Jide Idris, during a late-night briefing on Friday.

Pate explained that laboratory analysis performed using advanced infrastructure at the NCDC and Redeemer’s University in Osun State, supervised by Professor Christian Happi, showed the viral similarity.

However, he cautioned that existing evidence does not yet establish a direct epidemiological travel link between the Kenyan index case and Nigeria.

The index patient, an infected woman who first experienced symptoms on October 7 and sought medical attention at an Abuja private health facility on October 11, tested positive on October 20 for the Bundibugyo strain.

Public health authorities have successfully traced and placed 44 close contacts under strict quarantine, with ongoing testing returning mixed negative and pending results.

Addressing active containment protocols, Dr. Idris stressed that the NCDC is heavily reinforcing infection prevention measures across medical facilities nationwide.

He charged healthcare workers to maintain maximum alertness, properly utilize protective gear, and immediately notify public health officials upon identifying any suspected patient.

Concluding the briefing, the NCDC chief sternly warned Nigerians against spreading unverified social media rumors, advising the public to depend exclusively on official communications.

Minister Pate strongly reassured citizens that Nigeria maintains adequate public health capacity to handle the situation, urging people to stay calm, maintain personal hygiene, and practice regular hand washing to prevent further transmission.
